Class Discussion on Gay Marriage

Hey Bloggy Buddies! Today in Human Geography, we talked a lot about excellence. It was a very large mass of information, and it was also mainly still relating to Socrates. Since I've blogged a lot about Socrates, I thought I'd touch on the topic we approached briefly at the end of class. We were asked to suggest a controversial topic, so I volunteered and said gay marriage. Here are some of the point of views I heard, along with my own. Enjoy! <3

Because we had only a few minutes of class left, we could only have one representative for each side. My friend Angela represented those who were for gay marriage, and one young man whose name is escaping me right now, (If you're reading this sir, I apologize and I shall learn your name soon...) represented those against gay marriage. I am for gay marriage, and I believe that Angela perfectly expressed her beliefs as well as mine. Even though I still don't agree with _Insert Boy's Name Here_'s opposing opinion and views on the topic, I do have to admit he also presented his case well in a respectful manner.
His main argument was that God made it so that a man and a woman should be together, and that's the only way it should be. Many on the opposing side base their opinions off of the Bible, but even though many don't expect it, so do the individuals who are for it, including myself. I do believe that the bible has morals that we can use to apply to our daily lives. I don't, however, believe that that applies to all "morals" in the bible. There are certain absurdities like how it states that "women must suffer through childbirth" or how "whoever strikes his mother or father must be put to death." I don't think anyone can agree with putting someone to death for an act of violence that could be given a better consequence, especially if the act of violence was out of self defense. I'm all for respecting your elders, but this was too extreme. I also don't agree with women suffering through childbirth, and I'm sure many women would agree. My point being, people criticize the Bible and it's teachings everyday, so why go straight to it to defend a point of view if it's full of what some may call 'contradictions'.
I choose to simply apply my reasoning to two specific rules of thumb that everyone knows. First, God loves us. No matter what. If you're a woman with a woman, a man with a man, a woman with a man or a man with a woman. If we're happy, God is happy. Not to mention, who can say that a lesbian couple is less than a straight couple if they have absolutely no knowing of either pair? That lesbian couple could be traveling to third world countries together; spreading God's word while also living it throughout their daily lives? Whereas the straight couple could be liars, cheaters, thieves... pretty much everything God doesn't want us to be. I believe that love isn't between a man and a woman. It's between two humans. No, not even that. Two beings, that want to care for each other and live each day by each others' sides. Still believe it's a sin even though God loves us all? What about the second rule of thumb? Not only does God love all of us, but he forgives us of all of our wrongdoings. I don't personally believe that loving someone of the same sex is a wrongdoing, but for those who view it that way, wouldn't that "sin" already have been forgiven anyway?
My point is, people need to learn to accept the fact that our world is evolving. God created the world. Because he knows all, he knew all of this was going to take place. If it were so wrong, wouldn't he have done something to change that years ago in whatever godly or even ungodly way that may be? Moral of my story? Just accept and love each other. That's what God wants us to do. That's what I want you to do.
