The Trial of Socrates

Hey Bloggy Buddies! Today in Human Geography we were expanding on our discussion of  Socrates. We were then assigned to write a blog about his trial. Enjoy! <3

The trial of 70-year-old Socrates took place in 399 BC in front of a jury of 500. The philosopher was charged with disrespecting the Greek gods, and corrupting the youth of Athens. Socrates accusers told of him "failing to acknowledge the Gods that the city acknowledges" and "introducing new dietes". Due to his morals and teachings being "questionable" and "disrespectful", Socrates was to be sentenced to death if found guilty. Socrates chose to defend himself. After the accusers had three hours to present their case, Socrates had his own three hours to do the same. The majority of the diskats (Comparable to today's jurors) voted against Socrates, and came to the verdict that he was indeed guilty. Socrates was then officially sentenced to death by poison. He was then convicted and forced to torture himself with the very idea of being his own executioner. A friend of Socrates named Crito even bribed the prison guards in exchange for them to let Socrates escape. However, Socrates decided to accept his fate and chose not to take the opportunity to escape. He accepted his cup of hemlock without a single protest, and drank every last drop. His last words were, "Crito, we owe a cock to Asclepius. Do pay it. Don't forget." To me, this shows just what kind of person Socrates was. Even in his most urgent time of need, all he could think about what others. Socrates was a selfless, intelligent, inspiring man, yet he still was still ridiculed by others, despite just how much they benefited from him. Jealousy turned to hatred, just as it so often does in this day and age as well. Even the most superlative individuals can be criticized for just doing good. That's the way society was then, and unfortunately, it hasn't changed much over the years.
